Hidden Truths
A Living Lore Novel
Eighteen-year-old Ellie Mae Schmitt is certain her mom wasn’t killed by accident. Worse, her father is hiding the truth. When strange animal tracks appear on the outskirts of Hush Briar, Ellie delves into the mystery, convinced they have something to do with her mother’s death.
But Ellie isn’t the only one on the trail. With rumors of a highly coveted prize floating around, hunters are out in full force. Unsure who to trust, Ellie enlists the help of newcomer, Jake Harris, to hike the rugged terrain. Together, they battle the elements, unwind family drama, and navigate an unlikely attraction.
As danger ensues and they learn the creature isn’t the only one being hunted, Jake challenges Ellie’s motives. Can Ellie find the answers she needs before she drives away those she cares about or winds up like her mother?
Hidden Truths is adventure romance set in the Appalachian mountains of Kentucky. If you like gritty outdoor adventure, budding romance, and living lore, then you’ll love this Frank Peretti meets Nicholas Sparks story.
Need to Know
I first wrote Hidden Truths as a short story for my daughter (who designs creatures under the name Mel Cabre) about seven years ago. She was living in China over her nineteenth birthday. Knowing the gift I sent might never reach her, I also wrote her a short story.
We were going through a rough patch in life, so I created Ellie with an intense need to redeem her mom’s character—to stand up for her mother when others would not, because that is what my daughter was doing for me.
But I also created Ellie with bitterness and vulnerability because this story is really about Ellie’s relationship with her dad and her desperate need for him to tell the truth and include her in his life. However, in the book, the real truth that eventually surfaces is more unimaginable than Ellie, her dad, or I ever imagined.
When Mel came home from China, we took a career break and traveled the county while plotting The Living Lore Series. From that research, we wrote a couple non-fiction books published by Indiana University Press.
Non-Fiction Books with Mel Cabre
Bigfoot. Sasquatch. Skunk Ape. He’s everywhere. The most well-known cryptid in American history, Bigfoot is as feared as he is loved. In The Legend of Bigfoot: Leaving His Mark on the World, T. S. Mart and Mel Cabre reveal the myths, personal stories, and pop culture surrounding the legendary icon. Featuring more than 80 images recreating the Bigfoot’s appearance from firsthand accounts and folktales, The Legend of Bigfoot answers the question: Why is Bigfoot such a big deal?
In A Guide to Sky Monsters: Thunderbirds, the Jersey Devil, Mothman, and Other Flying Cryptids, authors T. S. Mart and Mel Cabre introduce 20 flying cryptids with legends that span the United States. With 70 hand-drawn illustrations, A Guide to Sky Monsters details our fascination with these creatures and describes both historical evidence found in the fossil record and the specifics of modern-day sightings.
